This event will honor the role that the St. Augustine civil rights demonstrations played in passing the 1964 Public Accommodations Civil Rights Act.  On June 18, 1964 the largest known arrest of Rabbis in the history of the United States took place in St. Augustine and Rabbi Hanan Sills was one of them.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. also jailed in St. Augustine, had contacted Rabbi Israel Dresner to urge other rabbis to participate in civil rights demonstrations protesting segregated conditions in the nation's oldest city.  This coming June 18 a 50 year anniversary celebration will be held in St. Augustine.

We are coming together to celebrate the breakthroughs that have happened and those that are yet to come regarding Civil Rights.  In recognition of what happened in 1964 and what is happening today we sing the songs of the Civil Rights movement and of those who have contributed to the cause of justice. We will honor the late great, Pete Seeger, who would have been 95 on May 3 and who leaves behind a wonderful legacy of songs and activism.  We also honor Rabbi Hanan Sills, his service to our community, and the courage he showed in 1964, by going to jail with 15 other Rabbis in solidarity with the African-American community and the search for justice.  And we honor those who still struggle for a just and equal society today.

It's a rich legacy, and worthy of major recognition, hoopla, song, joy and celebration!  This benefit will bring together a collective of vocalists and musicians, and a spirit of "sing -a-long" that was an integral part of the era we are revisiting.  While there are strides we have yet to take regarding equality in the world, we have come a long way, and it strengthens our intentions when we celebrate our hard earned progress in clearing the way for mutual respect among all people.

Yom Kippur is traditionally a day of fasting. We end the day with a ritual sharing of food. Please bring a “Biblically Kosher” dish to share (no pork or shellfish). Labels with ingredients are helpful for the diverse needs of our community.

Rosh HaShanah with the Ad Olam Community!

 

       

We gathered after Erev Rosh Hashanah services for a nice kiddush, great challah and of course, apples and honey!  Plus we were treated to a new niggun by Rabbi Hanan which he shared on his portable little laptop piano keyboard while we all joined in!

Through experiential exercises, we will find our path as an individual
and group for the coming year.

The High Holy Day Coordinators & Music Makers

These Holy Days are being coordinated by Rabbi Hanan, Jordan Michels, Rob Tobias, and Beth Miriam Rose. Beth and Rob are also are featured muscians this year. Rabbi Hanan will be present at most of the services leading and joining in song, chant, prayer and teachings. Thank you Valerie Keartes for taking on much of the logistics.

In addition music is being offered by: Youme Danziger, Emily Fox, Chico Schwall,  Debbie Sugarman.

Lisa Kaye will be offering sacred chant and Barry Nobel guiding us in meditation. Jordan and company will offer some theatracal stories.

All are welcome to participate in our services. We do not charge or sell tickets, but rather request a tax deductible $25 -$50 donation per adult for each of the four main services (2 morning and two evening), or an appropriate amount based on your financial situation.

To avoid dealing with money during the High Holy Days a mail back card and envelope are enclosed. Donations can also be made at the door. Make checks out to Ad-Olam. All money goes to support the work of Ad-Olam. Our combined collaborative efforts make these services possible.

We need volunteers for this and other events throughout the year. Let us know what your interest and talents are on the mail back form. This is especially important if you are unable to contribute financially.

Childcare

Regretfully official childcare is not provided. Parents are asked to share co-oping childcare during High Holy Day services. Snacks and juice will be provided and a room at Unity will be available for use by parents.

Special Showing of Movie at the Bijou for 2010 Selichot

See Get Low at the Bijou - Sunday at Noon, 9/5/10

It is a tradition to hold a special midnight service on the Saturday before Rosh Hashana. It is known as the Selichot or forgiveness service.In the Ad Olam way we have slightly altered the tradition. Rabbi Hanan has arranged a special showing of the Movie Get Low. Below is a link to the EW review, although Hanan says it really doesn't quite get it. Hanan sees it as a profound story of shame, guilt, forgiveness and redemption. He thought that you might appreciate this film of High Holy Day themes during this time leading up to the Holidays. The special showing will be for Ad Olam and friends at the Bijou this Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010 at noon. Cost will be $5 per person but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. The doors open at 11:40 and the concession stand will be open. A discussion will follow the show near by. The location will be announced at the show.
