Shabbat Shalom in Your Home

Shabbat, a day of rest,
Judaism's most radical idea
A time to balance
our human doings
with our human being

In keeping with the authentic spirit of our ancient tradition, we celebrate Friday night Shabbos in our homes, not in an institution. Ad Olam encourages the celebration of our heritage as a time for unwinding, breathing, and letting go, so that we may fully celebrate with our senses the joyousness and tranquility of the Shabbos time.

We honor Shabbat Shalom - Shabbat as a time of peace with harmony - by promoting positive thoughts and feelings and transforming the negative. We honor clarity by avoiding overindulgence and intoxication.

In our Shabbat celebration we:

  • Touch the ecstatic Joy and Peace found within this Holy day.
  • Share our stories, play together, sing and feast.
  • Teach and learn with open hearts and open minds.
  • Discover the creative and healing power of positive intention and holy words, learning to choose blessing over curse.
  • Honor our traditions by creating a blessing circle to cultivate gratitude, grace, and awe.
  • Become empowered to create and celebrate Shabbat in your own way.
  • Make new friends, and introduce old friends to a new way of being together.
  • Receive an Ad Olam Shabbos Guide or materials compiled with Rabbi Hanan.

Ad-Olam Shabbos Home Guide

This guide is an invaluable resource full of teachings, prayers, songs, readings, and poems. It is organized into sections to take you into the holy day, from beginning to end. Each section has a wide variety of moods, styles and emphasis that capture the joy and celebratory spirit of Shabbos. The selections tend to use inclusive language and are gender neutral.

This guide can be used to create a brief or fuller Shabbos experience. It also encourages and invites bringing in liturgy from other religious and secular sources, as well as creating your own prayers and poems.

Come to an Ad-Olam Shabbat

If you'd like to host a Shabbot but don't feel quite ready, come and experience an Ad- Olam style Shabbos with us. We have fairly regular Sabbaths in varying configurations that we can invite you to.

How Do I Create A Shabbat Shalom In My Home?

It's easy! We will pair you with an experienced Shabbos co-facilitator to help co-create a Shabbos ritual that honors the essence of the Holy Day, and your sensibilities, needs and passions.

The process:

  • Choose some potential dates for a Friday evening or Sat. Havdalah event.
  • Contact Ad-Olam to confirm a date and set up a meeting with Rabbi Hanan or one or more of our co-facilitators.
  • An initial meeting with the co-facilitator to decide who to invite and to receive a Shabbos Guide and instructions on using it.
  • Determine how many and who you would like to invite.
  • Make decisions regarding foods, potluck, and invitations.
  • Think and meditate upon what you wish to create: the tone, the season, and the people.
  • With help, select readings, prayers, songs, etc. Do you want to include any Hebrew?
  • Final meeting with the co-facilitator to finalize the shabbat ritual and leadership.
  • Make a donation to Ad-Olam to cover costs of materials and support the work of the Ad-Olam.
  • Bake or buy Challah, obtain wine or juice, and candles
  • Enjoy Shabbat!
