What is Shabbat? It has been said that Shabbat, a day of rest, is Judaism's most radical idea. A time to balance our human doing's with our human being. The essence of Shabbos holds that "being" is sometimes more important than "doing" or being productive. Come taste the sweetness of the shabbos! In the authentic spirit of our ancient tradition, where Friday night Shabbos was celebrated in the home, not in an institution, we continue with our warm Friday night home Shabbos gatherings. Friday night is understood in our heritage as the time for unwinding, breathing, letting go, enjoying and celebrating the joyousness and tranquility of the Shabbos time with our senses. It is a time for rediscovering places inside ourselves where qualities of devotion, love, intuition and inspiration exist. This age old ceremony which expresses the very essence of our tradition invites us - Jew and our non Jewish friends and family alike - to abandon our work in the world and to enliven the indwelling presence of God. We usually begin with a greeting of Shabbos and of one another, followed by the table ritual of candle lighting, Kiddush over juice and wine, and then the Motze over the Challah. Next we share our special potluck Shabbos meal which we follow with a sharing of music, story (sometimes even dance) and delight!
