God can never be expressed, only addressed

...And it's always in the second person.

-Martin Buber-

A dear Jewish friend of mine spent 13 years of her life living within a Christian community. In her return to Jewish life she shared the following, “What I learned in the Christian community is absent in the religious Jewish community, except for the Hassidim, namely, how to talk to God.”

In our workshop, we will learn that worship requires neither a fixed ritual nor a prescribed time … and can be entirely spontaneous and informal.  Furthermore, prayer does not have to be verbal; it can be contemplative or meditative.

My Mom, who had no formal Jewish education, though a child of Jewish immigrants, modeled for me what it was like to have a daily, ongoing conversation with the Holy One of Being.  Lest I be misunderstood by anyone, let me make clear that I am not talking here about Mr. or Ms. God on a Throne, but the One who can never be expressed, defined, or limited, yet can be addressed in the most personal and intimate manner.
